I think we already have a liturgical day for this--All Souls Day following All Saints. Odd, how the Reformer's were so adamantly against the "Popery" and unbiblical nature of the Roman calendar, but they didn't make much of a stink when these other days were sacralized.

It's more "faith/belief" and "practice", Jim. And, while I agree that these overlap for most of us, I also think that individuals do tend to use more of one or the other of the two lenses for defining the validity of their (and others') faith-life.

I think when we talk about a) participation, b) membership, c) leadership, d) ministerial leadership, we need to recognize different "circles" of belief and practice are necessary.

For example - Muslims and United Church folk can work on developing and supporting an Out-of-the-Cold/Cold-Wet-Weather-Safe programme - and we can participate in it together. In both our traditions, care for the neighbour and care for the stranger is important. Neither group needs to become the "other" to have this happen. With "membership", participation in each other's life is not enough - certain beliefs and practices related to those beliefs comes into play. Although we can learn from each other's spiritual leaders, to be a leader in each of those faiths require another level of practice and belief.

The revisiting of this report is key to understanding the current emphasis on The United Church of Canada becoming an "Intercultural" church. I'm not sure what you mean by "those in The United Church of Canada whose expression of their Christian faith is more focused on orthonomos and those whose expression is more focused on orthopraxis", Richard. I suspect you've found new words for "theory" and "practice"; which in my mind isn't all that different a discussion around "nature" and "nurture" where we debate whether humans become "who" they are because of one or the other. Reducing members and adherents of The United Church into two such groups, in my mind, doesn't really help the discussion to move further because any such paradigm is ultimately fatally flawed in the assumptions it begins with - i.e.; the assumption that we fit into one category or the other neatly.

Thank-you Richard, not only for tuning in to our historical debate, but for taking the time to offer your thoughtful reflections and prayerful encouragement.
Knowing that others walk in solidarity with us helps us in our journey.
